Microsoft is not the only choice for your business work, such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. And there are many alternatives to it. Whether you want local or cloud-based apps, our roundup of the best office suites help you choose the one for your needs.
LibreOffice is an open-source personal productivity suite that gives you six feature rich applications for all your document production and data processing needs, writer, calc, impress, draw, math, and base. Support and documentation is free. LibreOffice also comes configured with a PDF file creator, meaning you can distribute documents that you're sure can be opened and read by users of almost any computing device or operating system.
LibreOffice is a free suite of apps for creating text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more, which you can then save in Microsoft Office formats. With LibreOffice, you get nearly all the functionality of paid word processing and other programs without the hefty price tag.
Advantages of this office suite:
In LibreOffice, each program's interface will be familiar to anyone who's used Microsoft Office. Whether you're creating a presentation, a document, or a spreadsheet, you'll be able to quickly find the tools and features you're looking for, grouped just as you'd expect them to be.
In addition to the three core programs (Writer, Calc, and Impress), LibreOffice offers apps for drawing, math formulas, and databases. There is even a Database Wizard to guide you through the process of creating a new database.
While the default file format for this program is ODT, you can save documents in several other formats. That includes Microsoft Office file formats, making it easy to share LibreOffice files with others. You can also open Microsoft Office files.
LibreOffice is a good alternative to Microsoft Word or other paid word processing programs and office suites. Its apps are accessible and organized in a familiar way, and the suite includes a few bonus apps. Power users will have to install Java Runtime Environment to get the most out of the program, but casual users can likely skip this step and just enjoy the basic functions of word processing, spreadsheet creation and management, and presentation construction -- all for free.
Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium introduces a whole new service that keeps you connected wherever you are. Sign into Office 365 Home Premium, and access your applications, documents, and custom settings on any PC. You can combine Office with Windows 8 for the best experience yet, with even more ways to work the way you want. It helps you start documents more quickly with compelling new templates as well as a list of your recently viewed documents.
Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium edition includes wide-screen templates and theme variants in PowerPoint, and the ability to edit PDF content in Word and add online video, it's easy to bring documents to life, Excel's new Quick Analysis Lens, Recommended Charts, and Chart Animations make it easy to see the meaning in the numbers, SkyDrive online storage, capture, and organize a wide variety of information in OneNote.
In a world where you can get high-quality offline and cloud-based office suites for free, Microsoft Office may look increasingly quaint and expensive. So far, the company's answer has been to bind their suite and their cloud storage together, at bargain prices. But is it enough to overcome the competition's lack of a price tag?
Advantages of this office suite:
You may prefer to own your office suite instead of subscribing to it, but one of the advantages of Office 365 is that you'll automatically get security patches, new features, and whole new versions of Office, as soon as they're available. You can even sign up for the "Insider" program to get beta access to what's coming next, if you can't wait. Out-of-date software is often how malware gets onto your device, so automatic updates go a long way toward protecting the average user.
If you've become accustomed to web browser-based productivity like the Google Docs Suite, then you already don't have to worry about features or versions. But it's definitely a factor if you're working with sensitive material that needs to stay off the cloud.
And if you need to put such materials online, OneDrive (the company's cloud storage service integrated into Office) has built-in tools to password-protect individual files and to create shareable links to them that expire after a specified amount of time. Plus, if something happens to these files on OneDrive, the service keeps 30 days of backups that you can select from to restore lost or corrupted data.
Microsoft's main competitor is arguably Google Docs, but using Docs offline is awkward. You first have to get online to set it to offline mode, so if you want to work offline because you're having trouble connecting, you might be out of luck altogether. Office 365 works with your local files right away, while still syncing them in the cloud.
Setting up files for sharing is also straightforward. There's a Share button in the top right, and you click on it to create a OneDrive folder on your PC, where you can drop files that will automatically get synced in the cloud. If you're sharing the file with someone who's also using Office 365, this setup can let you both edit the file's contents in real-time.
WordPerfect Office Standard 2020 celebrates the latest version of the office suite supporting your productivity needs, from crafting documents and presentations to impressive spreadsheet creation. You'll continue to find all of the familiar features you need to work more efficiently when you tap into built-in PDF functionality, enhanced Reveal Codes, and eBook publishing. Collaboration is key and simple to leverage with support for more than 60 file types, including the latest Microsoft Office formats.
PowerPoint Viewer 2007 lets you view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions. This viewer also supports opening password-protected Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. You can view and print presentations, but you cannot edit them in the PowerPoint Viewer 2007. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.
PowerPoint Viewer 2007 is free software you can use to view your presentations from Microsoft PowerPoint 97 and beyond without opening the program. It's a quick and convenient way to view PowerPoint files on your computer.
There isn't much to be said about the interface, since there is almost nothing there: as soon as you open the program, it opens a window to select the file you want to view. It's just like viewing a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint except you can't alter or edit anything. You can print the presentations, which is a bonus. PowerPoint Viewer 2007 ran smoothly and without problems. It even displayed presentations from newer versions of Microsoft PowerPoint without noticeable problems.
Installing and uninstalling this software was clean and quick. It didn't add any icons or extra installations to our computer. We recommend it to anyone who needs to view or show PowerPoint files quickly.

By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats.
Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack makes files created with Office 2007 and later work seamlessly on earlier versions of Office. If you're using an unpatched version of Office, this download will fix it. However, before you install this pack, make sure to download and install all of the latest updates from Microsoft.
If you're still using Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, then this patch will help you easily open, edit, and save files created with newer versions of Office. It's a surprisingly big download -- checking in at 37MB. That means you should set aside some time to download it if you're on a slow connection. Once you install this pack, you don't have to do much to make it work. It automatically repairs the issue. It also adds support to the Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to open DOCX, XSLX, and PPTX files.
While it's surprising that Microsoft Office Compatibility pack is as big as it is, it's not loaded down with unnecessary extras, and it solves compatibility issues with older versions with little effort on your part.
