In Real-time Strategy (RTS) games, you gather resources, build bases, and maneuver armies at the same time as your opponent. Classic titles include Age of Empires, Warcraft, Command & Conquer, Starcraft and more.
Age of Empires is a civilization-building strategy game with few competitors. Designed at Microsoft by the same people who crafted the award-winning Civilization, Age of Empires features advanced gameplay that's comprehensive enough for hard-core fans of strategic gaming, yet simple enough for the newest gamer to pick up. It also has breathtaking 3D graphics, unusual in this area of the gaming world. Start the game with only your powers of persuasion, and then get your tribe learning essential skills and adapting and developing important technologies to advance. In time, you'll reach out to other civilizations through peaceful trade or through combat and annexation. Age of Empires is anything but predictable--single out a scenario to play and repeat, and you'll be greeted with a different situation every time. This demo version allows you to play one campaign.
Battle Realms is set in a story-driven fantasy world that centers around the legends and myths of the martial arts, Feudal Japan, and horror stories. The game world is comprised of several strange and legendary factions including samurai, werewolves, ninjas, and geisha warriors. Players will guide the fate of Kenji, heir to the fallen Serpent Empire. Kenji returns to his homeland after a seven-year exile, and must now make a choice whether to subjugate or liberate the feuding land. Standing against him are the untamed Wolf Clan and the malignant Lotus Clan. In addition, the game is set in a world that features a living resource system . How a player manages resources has a direct impact on remaining tactical decisions in the game. The game also features a combat system that uses combat engagement AI. This AI supposedly allows units to react intelligently to terrain, opponent ability and distance in combat situations. In addition some units have the ability to use secondary weapons.

This demo for Age of Empires III includes two missions from the single-player campaign. The demo also includes a single-player skirmish mode where you can play as the British or Spanish empires in the New England and Texas maps. The latest update of the demo includes a worthwhile tutorial and the ability to minimize the UI.
Age of Empires III is a historically-based real-time strategy game designed by Ensemble Studios, makers of Age of Mythology and Halo Wars.
After a lengthy installation, say a little prayer that your machine can handle this demo because the system requirements aren't listed anywhere in the download package. The Age of Empires III demo provides hours of fabulous real-time fun, but the lack of documentation and instruction haunts the experience.
The ReadMe.rtf file includes a useful list of shortcut keys, but there's no introduction or explanation of the gameplay, so you'll have to find your own way. In two single-player scenarios (building trading posts along a railroad track and defending a fort) and two skirmish maps (Texas and New England), you'll be collecting resources, raising structures, creating units, and bombarding your enemies.
Gameplay is deep, involved, and addictive, though the one major addition--the ability to send special shipments from home cities--seems extraneous. Noticeable absences in the hot-keys list are the ability to select all of one unit type and to create custom unit groups. Such shortcuts might exist, but without detailed help, we couldn't tell. Also, we were slightly disappointed with the range of view and the graphics overall. The rag-doll physics make for fun combat scenes, but the graphics themselves are actually less impressive than last year's Rise of Nations.
In Age of Empires II: HD Edition, fans of the original game and new players alike will fall in love with the classic Age of Empires II experience. Explore all the original single player campaigns from both Age of Kings and The Conquerors expansion, choose from 18 civilizations spanning over a thousand years of history, and head online to challenge other Steam players in your quest for world domination throughout the ages. Originally developed by Ensemble Studios and re-imagined in high definition by Hidden Path Entertainment, Skybox Labs, and Forgotten Empires, Microsoft Studios is proud to bring Age of Empires II: HD Edition.
Combining the features of hit games Dune II and Civilization, this strategy adventure proves to be one of the more challenging and graphically advanced we've seen in some time. We were floored by the program's highly detailed graphics, based on an isometric, two-dimensional design, which presents a world of medieval warfare in which you can practically feel the gritty action. Even when compared to more contemporary graphics, the game's soldiers and weapons, the program environment, and especially the interface elements will satisfy players. The interface is user-friendly and features plenty of options, including a great control system. Each of the 13 nations involved in Age of Empires II has its own strategic advantages over the others, and most units are put together on a "ro-sham-bo" strategy. The game includes historical scenarios as well as "skirmish" modes and multiplayer options. The game's choice of music adds an appropriate tension to the gameplay, and in a nice touch, the warriors of different nations speak in their native languages. Overall, we can't wait to get our battle gear on again. Any fan of historic action games who hasn't yet experienced Age of Empires should be sure to at least download this demo version.

Get ready to soil your plants in an all-new action-strategy game from PopCap. A mob of fun-loving zombies is about to invade your home, and your only defense is an arsenal of 49 zombie-zapping plants. Use peashooters, wall-nuts, cherry bombs, and more to mulchify 26 types of zombies before they can reach your front door. Each zombie has its own special skills, so you'll need to think fast and plant faster to combat them all. But be careful how you use your limited supply of greens and seeds... as you battle the fun-dead, obstacles like a setting sun, creeping fog, and a swimming pool add to the challenge. Plants vs. Zombies is a game by PopCap in which you have to plant various species of flowers in your garden to keep the zombies at bay. Whether you're nailing them with Pea Shooters, blowing them up with Cherry Bombs, or running them over with your lawnmower, those zombies don't stand a chance.
Good introduction: When you first open the app, you can jump right into playing, as the app walks you through the first few levels. This way, you'll get the basics down quickly and can continue to apply them as the levels increase in difficulty, and more variables are introduced.
Nice graphics: The characters in this game are cartoony, but well detailed and fun. Just about every element of the game is moving almost the whole time, slowly swaying to the eerie music playing in the background, which sets the perfect tone for the game's action.
Slow loading: The game is a little slow loading, probably because of the high-quality graphics. But once it gets going, it runs smoothly.
Timed trial: When you download Plants vs. Zombies, you have one hour to try it for free. To keep playing after that, you'll have to purchase the full version for $6.99.
Plants vs. Zombies is engaging, bordering on addictive, with tons of levels for you to work your way through. It would be nice if the free trial period was a bit longer, but it shouldn't take you long to get a feel for the game and decide whether it's something you'd like to spend money on.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Plants vs. Zombies 1.3
